I slept the entire way back to the clinic. Thank goodness Sammy drove. When we parked the cars, both he and Joss agreed to unload everything while I went to bed. Given that I was just as exhausted and as sore as the next patient, I didnât argue.
I had gotten to the base of the steps when muffled voices caught my ear. I closed my eyes and concentrated on the words. They were unintelligible, but frantic. Macyâs voice andâ¦someone elseâs? Elmer? Jonesy? I couldnât make it out, but it was coming from the clinic. Instead of starting upstairs, I armed myself with my crossbow and my bowie knife and headed to the backdoor.
The woods were quiet. There were a few signs of animal and insect life, but I couldnât help feeling there was something more out there. Something was happening inside the clinic because the frantic voices grew louder.
The moment I emerged from the woods, Macy jetted out of the clinic and stopped. She raced toward me. âWhere are the others?â
âTheyâre coming. Whatâs wrong?â
She sighed and shook her head. âItâs Georgie. Sheâs awake and frantic. She wants to speak with Dr. Joss. Something about it being a test. Thatâs what Esmeralda was trying to tell him before she was murdered. Itâs a test for Lavender, and heâs a part of it.â
I nudged her toward the woods. âTell them to drop everything and get here. Theyâre in the garage.â
âYeah, butââ
âIâll stay with Georgie. I wonât let anything happen to her this time.â
âBetter not.â Macy started for the entrance into the woods.
An arrow shot through the woods and slammed into Macyâs shoulder. She landed hard on her back. I was on her, my crossbow drawn to protect us both. My ear caught the sound of a second bow snap. My hand shot out to grab the arrow before it hit, but I bumped it off its trajectory and it landed in the grass. Even I had to take a moment to marvel at my reflexes. They were always more heightened whenever my adrenaline kicked up a notch. Although, it wouldâve been more impressive had I actually snagged the arrow from thin air and shot it back where it came.
I grabbed Macy around the waist then shoved her toward the clinic. I pulled my crossbow into position and scanned the woods. That arrow had come from above. They were hiding in the trees. âGet inside. Now!â
âButâ¦â Her breath caught.
I turned to see her struggling to make it to the porch. She was bent at the waist and her knees wobbled. Damn it, I didnât want whoever was out there to maintain their advantage on us. But, it was my duty to help Macy.
I looped my arm around her waist again and hurried her to the porch. âElmer! Jonesy! Get your asses down here. Macyâs hurt.â
Once I helped her to the door, I pushed her inside. I wasnât sure if she had fallen or not, but it was better than any fate that awaited her out here.
